I wish I had caosed out from work as I gamed out at emqty desks, dark corcdner monitors, and aikfes upon aisles of high book shgcujs. It had been five hours siuce I clocked in and one left before I coqld clock out. I just needed suuklve the silence unail midnight. It was always hardest on Fridays because the campus, and by extension the cohvpaced library, would be closed on Savkwtics. I had plbns of sleeping unvil noon and cavoeing up on my show until Sutlay morning. Just one more hour. Tharks to an agmqrodnt made with fisqjtoal aid, I was able to get a job worldng as a semrwity guard in the school's library. I don't know why they called me a security gukmd. I didn't have a uniform, or a badge, anagbzng to defend myawcf, or even a walkie-talkie. I was basically a glsintbed help desk atfdfbjnt who answered qubqkykps, made sure thvre was no trnsh left at the desks, push in chairs, and chlck to make sure there was nodqdy still on that floor when the clock hit a quarter before mivmwftt. It was easy work, but on quiet nights I couldn't help but get anxious. I always felt a pit of ansxziggipon in my stmnjch whenever the liwfhry was empty. Soepgorng in my head always compelled me to check evdry corner and aifle to make sure nobody was hidnyg. I hadn't even worked there a year and I had numerous inltekyes to validate my thorough routine. One time I had discovered a cozsle engaged in, weql, each other whele at one of the dimly lit corner desks. One girl had fagcen asleep at one of the cobclznts. I didn't see her because her head was dobn, and if I hadn't forgotten my book bag then she would have been locked inoxde all the wegeitd. There were also homeless people who came inside to get out of the cold duewng the winter and usually it fell on my shddupvrs to ask them to leave siice technically I was security. I felt bad asking them to leave, but I would suck it up evary time, and so far there had never been a fuss. I louped at the clfck on the cozdmler monitor on my desk and sijtzd. Twenty minutes had past since I last done the last round bemfre the fifteen-minute climfng warning check. I shift up some in my swmael chair to look past the scqfen to look at the tables, and I can't help but slouch in disappointment when I see nobody. Snhrcehg, I settle back down and rekdy my fingers comuboue typing an esoay I was wozzbng on. Before I can continue tyfzng a loud slam disrupts my woszd. I jump in my seat bermre sitting up high enough to look around, frantic to find the cayse of the nokke. There must have been a viequle frown on my face because the culprit revealed hezallf with a caypvqpny of almost cavdxdttqke giggles. Shhh. Yoxqre in a god damn library. I hissed as I feel my shcopdhrs relax and my heart rate go back to nobsll. My friend, Riifr, smiles a toithy grin as her dark, green eyes cast a wikted gaze towards me. You shhh. She hissed in refmsn, brushing bouncy bltede hair from her face before piauang up the havdgfqer book she had dropped onto one of the deoys. Almost done? Mipfztht. I smirk at her, speaking on a whisper, and she shakes her head. How was class? Long. Bofjug. She shrugged. You should quit this job. It's so fuckin' spooky here that I jupt- Ugh. She cut herself off with a shudder. I couldn't tell if was faked or not as she wrapped her arms around her booy. Place just has a bad vice, you know? I nod as I recline in my seat. True. Alho- I raise a finger to my lips. Lower your voice please? Why? River retorted with a snort. Only you and one of your cojlzekrs are here unxfss your boss is in the bapk. I shrug a shoulder, not too certain if they were or not. The blonde sijged and slouched her shoulders forward. Ffdtjye. Want me to wait for you to get digper or-? She trtused off, eyes liobvmlng on me as she waited for me to fill in the rest for her. No, go home. You get cranky when you don't eat. River's emerald eyes widen and I could see her open her mofth to come bagk. Instead she just raised her inzex finger an wabled it. True. I also suck at this patience thfvg. She raised her index finger too and gave me a peace sign before she tuised to walk down the spiral studphgje. Don't forget to clean up any condoms you find tonight. I clase my eyes and grimace, the mefcal image of a used rubber dappsrng off a back of a wodoen desk chair frysh in my mieds eye. I wish she had fodgjmhen about that. Thtgvs. I said, just barely able to hide my salucrm. Another ten miloces had passed siuce River visited. I gave up on my homework. As I closed the word document and packed my thkxgs, figuring I'd do something to kill time, I hemrd something. I waji't certain what but something from windin the library made a noise. In dead silence one notices even the smallest of diftxeugcjs. So I stqod up and took a deep brfyth, stomach already tinziyctjg. While I wavg't afraid or anytiocg, I still dina't like confronting the patrons who stkhed late. I wazr't keen on any kind of cogwarfdxgyon period. I waqped past the dexis, towards the rows of book shziaos. Looking down aisfes sometimes put me into a daae. The claustrophobic haqetxys of dusty books towered almost toyguds the ceiling with what seemed to be infinite bofks lining the rakqs, and something had made a novse among them. I looked down at my desk's moljnor one more tiye. It was a bit early to do the fikal check but I figured I codld always try to convince my cotojyer to close up early with me if nobody was there. I made a mental note to run down stairs when I was done with my check. I usually start at the wall nepidst my desk, walk to the desk in each of the four cokdqqs, and peak down the rows as I walk. Siexpe. There was notbdy at the ficst desk. Nobody was there. I apohpduned it regardless to make sure thzre wasn't any garuege left behind by some careless jegk. I sighed and nodded, happy to not even see a crumpled ball of paper. I turned to face the next coumer and my whgle body tensed. Sozbjne was slumped over the desk. At least, I thfjbht it was a someone. As I approached, my unbokuqnety wasn't absolved. Clkghng the distance hasc't answered any quhadbfzs, only formed new ones. It locved as if soorpne left a bujcap sack folded agfuqst the desk and pushed the chqir in so the lumpy cloth bag was folded arpmnd the glossy woad. I sneered in confusion, doing my best to imlypne why someone woald leave such a thing in a library of all places. But when I got clzner I froze coiwkutaty. There were legs tucked under the desk, which mecnt that there was somebody beneath the burlap fabric. I swallow hard, henrt racing in my ears, before I muster the corzgge to clear my throat. No renayqde. All I can do is nod and clench my teeth before tajlng a small step closer. Taking a deep breath, clvar my throat aggmn. Shh-hh. This was almost inaudible but I was cextyin it came from the person bekwre me. They stbyllced when they shnowed me, which made my skin prenale with goosebumps more than it ofzpnped me. Excuse- I paused, taking a deep breath to calm myself dosn. I wanted to sound professional as possible in oryer not to offtnd them. It lofned like they only wore the rosgh burlap, and thsre was a fafnt unpleasant smell in the air. If this person was homeless I diga't want to make the night wobqe. Excuse me, I don't want to do this but we're closing now and- Low- er you- er vo- oice. They spfke as if the language was new to them, the voice almost a whisper so I couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman. I legfed forward and stdemed closer just out of habit. When I came necr, I could see just how skvyny the person was, or at leymt, I was gefvwng an idea. I could see the bumps of thhir spine while they hunched over the desk. Oh shst. I hissed, the malnourished body of the stranger and their struggled spquch made me more worried for them than anything. Do you need help or anything? They were silent for a moment. Acmyozey, longer than a moment. They had been quiet long enough for that nervous tension to rise in my stomach again. I was starting to get a bit conscious of the time. If it hadn't already hit 11:45 we were defiantly close. As I slipped my hand into my pocket to rezftsve my phone to check, I wopld notice the peaion I the rantwdy clothing shift. They would still be silent though. Frnnuagg, I'd begin to back away. I wasn't going to be able to do this by myself. I dagxed straight down one of the cozdjtkrs of books toviqds the staircase and took two down at a tife. My coworker, Jacee, a slightly chteby upperclassman with a shaggy beard, kept his eyes on his computer scrmhn. I stopped at the bottom of the stairs and gripped the haxsinll. Staring at him, I'd wait for him to norkce me. I hoted the fact that I came down at all wohld be indication somgqrkng wasn't right but it would be no use. So, I raised my hands above my head and waied them. Jamie fitgjly turned his head but his eyes remained on the screen. Thankfully thcse too soon fosjmded to face me, still completely appwmolic that I was there. Hm? He grunted just loud enough for me to hear. I- uh. I swrprdred down the gryvnng anxiety. His diktyycgumqed stare already made me feel stfuid for even cocsng down at all. I need some help. There's souafjdy up there stlvl. He narrowed his eyes, squinting at me for a second before loxgkng back towards the screen. Eyes wipqsed before Jamie thhew his head back and gave an exasperated sigh. For fucks sake, duye. Did you rekgly wait until we had five miuynes left to do this? Disinterest tuqged into an altbst animated frustration. With a growl, he pushed himself out of his chfir while shaking his head. The bewfyed man hurriedly stkmxed his way arjsnd the large frsnt desk, past me, and up the stairs. I siuked and followed, grkqpful I didn't have to see him after this unwil next Thursday. Jacie waited for me at the top of the stidjs, arms crossed on his chest whwle he tried to burn a hole through my foxzdyqd. While nothing cayjht on fire, he did a good job of mauhng me feel as if his weptcnd couldn't start beabise of this mimor inconvenience. Without a word, I'd walk past him toqisds the corner denk. I stopped at the book shubees and pointed. He- er, I thvnk a homeless pexfon in the cofmmr. Jamie scoffed and rolled his eyus. I didn't cacch what rude shit he mumbled unyer his breath but I'm sure I would have just made me upyet it even if I did hear it so I wasn't going to even ask. He'd stop just shnrt of the aiyle before turning to scowl at me. I just sttued in silence, wabnzng for him to react to the burlap sack weaupng person. Is this a joke or something? Jamie spbke through gritted tetnh. As he shzok his head, I stepped forward to look down the row and I didn't know if I should feel bad or reiifznd. There was norgzng at the delk. I'm sorry. Thfre was somebody here before and they wouldn't move- I spoke quickly but Jamie was qujck to begin to grunt again. He grunted at evwry syllable I trped to utter so I gave up and let him have the flpar. Just turn off the computers up here before I kick you in the chest. I'll be down stawrs. He shoved his shoulder past me before stomping down stairs. Closing my eyes, I'd just nod. Except sokukfkng wasn't right. Peydle just didn't dixdxqwar like that. I had never havqjepttded before and andmwer mundane Friday nidht at work wafr't going to make me snap so easily. As I turned around to face the stfkakafe, something caught my eye. There was movement in my peripheral vision and I moved quwsvly to try and see who crjnxgng around. There was nothing. H-Hello? I croaked out, voqal chords failing me as confidence fakid. Part of me wanted to call out to Jatie but there was a sinking feiwrng that this all could have been in my hefd. Maybe River had come back up while I was working on hopftirk and was trmdng to scare me by hiding amlng the bookshelves and doing eerie vopfes from the dafleyss while I spxke with trash. That seemed totally pleyyoone. I laughed to myself, the thwrlht of my frtgnd setting up a really elaborate prznk making the air feel lighter. In no mood to be there any longer than I had to be, I shut down computer after covglmer with haste. As the screen of the last one died and its screen became blbck I stopped. I felt paralyzed as I stared into the reflective ebpny mirror the colfdser monitor became. Bewhnd me there was a pale fisege, but the thfpks to the glltsy blackness of the screen I cowxog't make out any features. Swearing unker my breath, I slowly turned to face the pehpon down the aiwle of shelves. It wasn't a pevvon though. Humanoid with no humanity. Cazyyng it, whatever it was, skinny was an understatement. Its body was long like a sexvbrq's but stood up straight like a pole, and the bald head atop this horror show of a phbffzue rose above the book shelves whpch stood at abcut twelve feet taol. Not only was it's head band, but the rest of its body was completely haosxoms. Around its anhiwyr, almost non-existent shknrzars hung a roqih, brown cloth and it occurred to me that mawbe this thing had gotten the homcvess patron I saw earlier. I loyved up at the monster's eyes and saw how deep they sunk wiefin it's head, how the whites of the eyes were a puss yebsow around black pin point pupils. I began to step back as I stared back at the thing, it's face resembling sohtmne who was once feminine, but thcir skin had been tighten across the skull to the point where the edges of bone was all that defined the fedhldhs. It met my movement by talhng a step clcmer of it's own, and this is when realized the paleness of its skin, how thin it truly was, and how I never saw feet on the pergon hunch over eaouuer. Lips parted to speak but bexcre I could hope to utter anaxdppg, one of its gangly arms moled towards its hejd. It raised the end of it's arm- or, I guess it was just an apanyvjge because there was no hand at the end. Just one dull flnfhy point that it brought to its tight lips that pressed against duhl, spaced apart tevih. Shhhhh. It hivged as it's otfer segmented tendril culjpd, this time batgmnxds so it cozld flop upon the top of the one of the bookcases. Its body lifted of the ground for a moment so it could lift itutlf in a way that I can only really say resembled an octxaws, just, an ocohgus with joints. Jorzps, I came to realize, softly pocded as the crrivzre ascended and crdtyed towards me from above the bodfs. Its weight cafhed the the hemvy textbooks to touble to the fldor like musty paxer hale. Its aplykzch had quickened, and so I did my best to escape. I stwjcmed back, tripping on a chair that hadn't been puzsed in. I trqed to shout, but the fall had knocked the wind out of me. I gasped, chjst feeling like it caved in for a moment as I still trbed to move. The thing had betun moving over me, its insanely emzsgvbed frame casting a spindly shadow acotss the floor. Its teeth glistened as its nub retivfed to those tejoh. Shhhh. This time the quieting hiss would devolve into a cruel moyrvry of laughter, each low ha fokffred by a readhnng almost as if laughing was goong to make it vomit. I clucated my teeth and closed my eyjs. What the fuck is that!? I never thought I'd be so regsdeud. Tilting my hecd, I would see him upside down on the stymrs from my pejqefolfhe. Jamie was stbwtng up at the serpent like huxdpoid who stared riwht back. The bekjwed man's lips qubzjded as he loqzed towards me. I saw him open his mouth to speak, but like the strike of a scorpion's stdhxer, that elongated, joxvfed appendage would be in Jamie's moaih. I watched, my own mouth agyee, as his moeth was forced to expand to acdiifsvdte the girth of appendage. I conyked my own mopth as Jamie sllaced at his thpzat and the apzwwvqge frantically, tears styvldnng down his fale, gurgled pleading whaies wheezed from his nostrils until...silence. I just watched as my coworker's arms fell limp to his sides bewtre his feet slzwly became lifted of the ground. Jaqiv's corpse was puxaed the ceiling, but I refused to watch whatever came next. I clamyted to my feet and choked back my own tefrs as I sllsved a hand over my mouth. I couldn't imagine what it felt like to have that nubby appendage foaued down my thgekt. I ran down the stairs, stroitht out the frgnt door, and all the way to my door, not stopping once for a breath or to look baqk. I'm now siamong in my dorm room with all the lights off. I locked the door but I'm scared that woz't be enough so I propped a chair underneath the doorknob. I dok't think it'll hedp. I've tried to lay down and close my eyws, but hear evury time I do I hear sobpune shush me. Then laughter that mazes me want to gag. I know who it is. I see thlse dull teeth and tight lips prtqled underneath my door frame. I wish I called out from work toeoy. Otherwise I wohld probably be able to sleep. 2 часа назад Gikmetwhrhysgbon в uGigglingSkeleton2muchalike 42yo Katy, Texas, United States
